Lavender Bells is a compilation of the less "characteristic" tracks released as virtual 45s in 2021 along with two previously unreleased recordings. 'Painting Sunsets' and 'Terminal'. The songs explore the more varied and progressive aspects of the band's musical approach while still staying true to the ideal of honest and straightforward song-craft.

The title track by Jordan White is a spacey, and meditative reflection of our tiny place in the universe and is in regular rotation at Rusticator live shows.

'Glittering Good' is another in a series of fatherhood-centered songs by Tony Califano, this one with a lyrical assist from Ken Mossman and some beautiful violin playing from Joe Gumpper.

'Painting Sunsets' grew from a musical idea of drummer Derek Dobson and tells the story of a hapless narrator in a doomed and fleeting romance.

'Brush with Royalty' is a song by Jordan about a princess, with Tony putting on his cape and doing his best Rick Wakeman impression on the organ.

For a band that started in bluegrass, Rusticator has some die-hard prog-rock fans in the band and 'Terminal' is another co-write from the progger in chief, Derek and Tony. The song is in 2 parts, the first originally written with just acoustic guitar and ukulele while the second part dates back to well before the formation of Rusticator, with a lyrical update from Ken Mossman.

The set rounds out with 'Pythia', originally a Tony solo track that was spruced up with some lovely violin from Joe.

Dry Town

Rusticator

Dry Town is the first compilation of the band's Virtual '45s which were originally released in 2021 during the pandemic. This set focuses on the more Americana and rootsy material from that year, with a future release planned to highlight the more 'out of character' tracks from that very unique year.

The group offers a uniquely organic sound with free-flowing grooves, rollicking upright pianos, banging upright bass, jangling acoustic guitars, sawing fiddles and relentless banjos that feels more retro '70s country rock, than the alt country it will most likely be called.

That's not a bad thing.

It all comes into play on "The Palace Flophouse," a song with rambunctious playing and a lot of heart that was inspired by a story from John Steinbeck's ''Cannery Row.'' The plaintive, spare, not-good-enough-for-you ode "Smoke Before The Flame" is moving, while "Late September Wind" is simply gorgeous. The banjo-driven "Tabletop Mountain" is a mournful love gone bad story, while "Waiting for the Dawn" is a delicate folk song that's both beautiful and poignant.

This is a strong record by folks who are defiantly in it for the music. Rusticator makes a big splash with this wonderful collection of songs, so seek this record out, as well as its live shows. You surely won't be disappointed.
